Aesthetic treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are more popular and more accessible than ever!
When they are done well, they can subtly enhance your features and soften the signs of ageing. At their best, they are completely undetectable. Unfortunately, when treatments are done poorly or excessively, they can lead to the dreaded “overdone” or “fake” look. This is what many people fear when first considering aesthetic treatments.
So why do some people end up looking obviously treated and how can you avoid this happening to you? This guide will give you practical tips on how to avoid looking “done,” how to get the best from your treatments, and why a subtle, holistic approach consistently delivers beautiful, natural results.
The Biggest Mistakes That Lead to Unnatural Results
No Consultation
Our mantra is: “Every decision we make begins with how our client feels.”
A thorough consultation is essential. Without it, treatments can become transactional rather than personalised. Understanding your concerns, goals, lifestyle, and expectations is the foundation of achieving natural, lasting results.
Ignoring the Skin
Your skin is your canvas, it’s the first thing everyone sees. (If I had a pound for every time I said this!)
But it’s true! If you ignore skin quality, you can never achieve truly beautiful results, no matter how much filler or Botox is used. In fact, when you focus on skin health and regeneration, you often need less injectable treatment overall.
Healthy, glowing skin creates a natural, refreshed appearance that injectables alone simply cannot achieve.
Treating Areas in Isolation
The face should never be treated as separate parts.
Focusing on one area, such as lips or cheeks, without considering the rest of the face can lead to imbalance and make treatments more noticeable.
A holistic approach looks at the entire face including layers of the face, like building blocks, ensuring harmony, proportion, and natural-looking results, ideally always starting with the skin.
Trying to Look Younger
One of the biggest mistakes is trying to look younger, or your injector trying to make you look younger. Patients do often come in and say, “Make me look 20 years younger.” I think what they really mean is that they want to look as fresh and feel and energised as they did 20 years ago. Its our job as injectors to explain this, to help our patients achieve their goals by educating and guiding them towards the write treatments.
The goal is not to look younger, it’s to look like the best version of yourself now. Softer, fresher, healthier, more radiant—but still you.
When treatments are done with this mindset, the results are more subtle, age-appropriate, and ultimately far more flattering.
Lack of Long-Term Planning
My husband’s favourite saying is: “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” And this couldn’t be truer when it comes to aesthetic treatments.
A good treatment plan should always consider maintenance and the natural ageing process. You will continue to age, and the treatments that suit you in your 40s may not be appropriate in your 50s. It’s important to keep everything age appropriate.
For example, Botox in the forehead can become less favourable over time. The frontalis muscle (your forehead muscle) is the only muscle that lifts and supports your eyebrows. As you age, you rely on this muscle more to prevent hooded eyelids. This means you may not be able to use Botox in this area in the same way you did in earlier years.
Instead, alternative approaches such as skin treatments or skin boosters can provide better, more natural results.
So, How Do You Achieve Natural Results?
Choose the Right Practitioner
Do your research. Choose someone who aligns with your values, someone who listens to your goals, understands your concerns, and has the knowledge and experience to build a long-term treatment plan.
Just as importantly, they should be confident enough to say “no” when something isn’t right for you.
Look for:
• Medical expertise
• Experience
• A focus on natural results
• A practitioner who prioritises long-term outcomes over quick fixes
This builds trust and ensures you are in safe, experienced hands.
Take a “Less is More” Approach
Little and often is key. The best results are rarely achieved in one appointment, they are built over time.
Trust the process. Starting conservatively and maintaining results gradually will always look more natural than doing too much, too quickly.
Invest in Your Skin
Skin is our absolute favourite thing to treat in clinic, and for good reason.
When your skin is healthy and glowing, you look fresher, you feel more confident, and you naturally need less of the treatments that can sometimes lead to an overdone appearance.
We often recommend starting with foundational skin treatments, such as a skin scan to support accurate diagnosis, alongside medical-grade skincare to enhance the results of in-clinic treatments. Regenerative treatments such as AgeJETand microneedling can also play a key role in improving overall skin health. Ultimately, the more you invest in your skin, the less you may feel the need to rely on injectables.
I’ll be writing more about skin—as it’s my favourite topic—but it’s important to understand that your skin is often a reflection of what’s happening internally, whether it’s hormones, gut health, stress, or nutrition, all of which can manifest visibly on the skin.
There are key periods in a woman’s life where, biologically, both the body and the skin are changing. If we can learn to support—and even “biohack”—the skin during these phases, it won’t just improve how you look, it can significantly impact how you feel too.
Great skin is the foundation of every natural aesthetic result.
